Reclaim the Records, a tremendous organization working to make public records public again, recently obtained copies of the New York Death Index for the years 1880 through 1956. We have made the individual index pages - over 88,000 of them - browsable. Though the index is not yet searchable, we have made it easy to navigate.
Some of the original page images are faded, out-of-focus, or difficult to read due to other factors. Please feel free to save any of the images to your computer so that you may try different techniques to make them easier to read. Sometimes simply adjusting the brightness and contrast can make a big difference, in other cases viewing the image in negative can help. If you have a photo editing software such as Photoshop or PhotoPOS, you can utilize different tools to improve the quality.
