AN INSANE MOTHER'S CRIME
-----
Murders Her Little Girl and Takes to
the Woods
HANCOCK, N. Y., Jan 12. -- A few mornings
since Mrs. Gustavus Russ, wife of laborer
employed in the Crary brothers' tannery, was
found to be missing, and upon searching the
house the body of her youngest child, a little
girl three years of age, was found with her
throat cut from ear to ear. News of the oc-
currence spread like wildfire and the men
from the tannery turned out to capture the
mother of the child, who had fled after com-
mitting the deed. Mrs. Russ was found run-
ning through the wood almost naked with-
out shoes or stockings or any dress. When
found she was a raving maniac and will have
to be taken to the asylum. She undoubtedly
killed her child in one of her crazy fits. Her
insanity is believed to be hereditary. The
murdered child was an especial favorite of
the unfortunate woman. Mr. Russ is nearly
crazed with grief.
